Medication at School
Medication Administration Procedures
If your child needs medication during the school day or a school-related activity, please contact the school nurse.
- Complete the authorization form. Prescription and over-the-counter medications require a completed Medication Authorization Form signed by the parent/guardian and licensed healthcare provider before school staff can give medication.
- Report medication changes. Notify the school nurse if your child’s medication or instructions change. A new Medication Authorization Form signed by the parent/guardian and licensed healthcare provider is required before school staff can give a new medication or changed dose.
- Have a parent/guardian bring the medication to school in its original, properly labeled container. Please do not send medication in your child’s backpack.
- Pick up unused medication when it is discontinued or at the end of the school year.
- Authorization is required for prescription and over-the-counter medication. This includes Tylenol, ibuprofen, allergy medicine, and medicated cough drops. Before school staff can give medication, the school must receive a Medication Authorization Form signed by the parent/guardian and licensed healthcare provider.
- Arrange self-carry with the school nurse. Students may carry and use certain medications, such as inhalers and epinephrine, when the required documentation is on file. Other self-administration arrangements may be available under a student’s individual health plan, 504 plan, or IEP.
