Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

Cook County School District 130 recognizes the public's right to inspect and obtain copies of public records in accordance with the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140). The District is committed to conducting its business in an open and transparent manner while protecting records that are exempt from disclosure under applicable law.

 

Submitting a FOIA Request

FOIA requests must be submitted in writing and should describe the records sought with reasonable specificity. Requests may be submitted by mail or email to the District's Freedom of Information Officer.

FOIA Process

Upon receipt of a written request, the Freedom of Information Officer will review the request and respond in accordance with the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.

The District will:

  • Provide the requested records;
  • Notify the requester if additional time is needed as permitted by law;
  • Deny the request, in whole or in part, if the records are exempt from disclosure under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, providing the statutory basis for the denial; or
  • Contact the requester if clarification is needed to process the request.

The District will respond to non-commercial FOIA requests within five (5) business days after receipt of the request unless an extension is permitted by law. If an extension is necessary, the requester will be notified in writing of the reason for the extension and the anticipated response date. Commercial requests are processed in accordance with the timelines established by the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.

 

Fees
Inspection of public records is available without charge. If copies are requested, the following fee schedule
applies unless otherwise provided by law:

  • The first 50 pages of black-and-white, letter or legal-sized copies are provided at no charge.
  • Additional black-and-white letter or legal-sized copies may be charged up to $0.15 per page.
  • Color copies, oversized documents, and other special reproductions will be charged at the District's
  • actual cost.
  • Electronic records are generally provided at no charge unless the District incurs the actual cost of the
  • recording medium used to provide the records.
  • Certified copies of records may be subject to the fee permitted by law.
