August 6, 2008

 Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back for the 2008/09 school year to all Nathan Hale Families, especially our new families from Blue Island! It promises to be a year filled with much excitement, as well as many changes and challenges.

I am pleased to report that we did quite well on the state testing (ISAT) last spring. 82.8 % of third graders at Nathan Hale Primary met or exceeded on the test. These are our best scores ever. For the first time, more children exceeded the state standards than the combined number of children that were either below the standard or at the warning status. This is wonderful news and I am very proud of everybody, particularly the students. Nathan Hale Intermediate continued to improve as well with 63% meeting or exceeding the state standard. Obviously we have lots of work to do, but we are moving strongly in the right direction and I am confident that we will get to our goal of 100% of the children meeting or exceeding on the ISAT.

We have four new early childhood classrooms opening this month at the north end of NHP and the major addition to the front of the campus is scheduled to be completed in December. We have four new teachers at NHP to support the Bi-lingual and Dual Language Programs as well as approximately 80 new students coming to us from Blue Island. We have also added a new secretary at NHP to help all of our Spanish speaking families.  You also have probably noticed the reconfigured parking lot. We have removed one of the driveways in the middle of the campus to create more parking and to streamline the traffic flow. We are looking at other improvements to the parking area to improve the flow of bus traffic around the campus. As always, please drive slowly and cautiously on and near the school grounds.

Open house this year will be on August 28th from 6:00 to 7:30. You will have a chance to see some of the new areas, and we will have some inexpensive dinner options to make it easier on busy families. We will send home a flyer on August 20th with the details.

Market Day will be going again starting in September, and order forms will be available at August Registration. Last year we earned $2,375.00 towards school activities thanks to this program. A special thanks to Joann McInerney and Diana Koepp for running the program at all three schools. They need your help this year to keep it going. Let me know if you would like to volunteer this year.

The entire staff is excited about the upcoming school year and cannot wait to get started. Let’s make a special effort this year to insure that all of our students are here on time every day and that we limit the number of days children are out of school. This is very important to ensure a successful school year for all. I look forward to seeing you in August. If you have any questions you can e-mail me at jduggan@district130.org

 Sincerely,

 Jim Duggan
