High Expectations By All and For All

Be Respectful                       Be Safe           Be Responsible

“It takes a village to raise a child.”  African Proverb

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Welcome back after what felt like more of a Spring than Winter break.  We hope everyone is refreshed and ready to learn.  The following quarter is extremely important as it ends with state and local testing.  Teachers will be working hard to cover curriculum and to prepare students with test taking strategies. Here are some  important things parents can do  to help.

Make sure your child is well fed and gets a good night’s sleep.  The recommendation for school age children is around 10 hours a night.

     Avoid unnecessary absences and tardiness.

     Check school bags and homework.

Ask about the day at school and what was learned.

Go to the library.  Read to and with your child regularly.

Tips for a Healthy New Year from the American  Academy of Pediatrics.

Prevent violence by setting good examples

Demonstrate and teach displays of affection, attention, approval, and how to say ‘I’m sorry’ and how to ask for, give and accept forgiveness. All of these promote love, good will, self-esteem and reduce likelihood of violence, aggression, and negative, destructive words and behaviors.
Set limits for your children by letting them know what’s expected, and notice when they meet your expectations. Celebrate their successes with them. Try to avoid hitting, slapping or spanking. Your children may copy you and think that it is OK to hit other people.

Pay attention to nutrition

Nutrition makes a big difference in how kids grow, develop and learn. Good nutrition is a matter of balance. Provide foods from several food groups at each meal. Emphasize foods that are less processed, such as whole grain breads and cereals and fresh fruits and vegetables. Review your child's diet with your pediatrician for suggestions.

Make your children feel loved and important

Recognize every effort and increment of ‘progress’ or ‘improvement’ they make; don’t compare siblings; understand your child’s behaviors and emotions; recognize ‘hidden agendas’ like acting up, may be a cry for attention and help; not doing homework may be a sign of distraction or learning problems. Keep expectations for changes and goals realistic and use ‘baby steps.' Celebrate their individuality and tell them what makes them special. Assure them that they are loved and safe. For more tips go to www.aap.org

The School Year is Half Over!

It is hard to believe that the second quarter ends this Friday, January 12th.  Conferences will take place on January 26th by teacher or parent request only. For students who do not have a scheduled conference, report cards will go home on January 19th

PTA BIG Party

Once again this year, the lucky sellers of 10 or more items in the fundraiser will be invited to participate in an afternoon of fun in the gym with a variety of activities guaranteed to excite and exhaust.   It will take place this Friday, January  12th.  The monthly PTA meeting will be held Monday, January 8th at 7:00 in the Nathan Hale Intermediate Media Center.  Come join us or email ideas or concerns to Hale_pta@yahoo.com.

Safe Dog Mission Accomplished

We have successfully purchased a bullet-proof vest for a police dog.  Thanks for all your help.  The official vesting date is yet to be arranged.  We will keep you informed.

Dare Graduation

We are proud to present our new DARE graduates.  The ceremony will be on January 23rd from 9:00-10:00 at NHI.  Look for invitations coming soon.

Intermediate After School Program Begins This Week

Mrs. Lampos, Mrs. Harrison, Ms. Hennessey, Ms. Szukalski, Mrs. Jordon and Mrs. Anderson will be helping students boost their reading and writing skills on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the next several weeks.  If your child has been invited, mark your calendar and remind your child of dates to attend.  There is limited space so participants need to take advantage of the opportunity.

Vocabulary Notebooks at Home

There is a well established relationship between vocabulary knowledge and academic achievement.  Help your child to start a notebook.  Talk about the meaning of the monthly vocabulary words and help  write a definition in kid-friendly words. Add synonyms, antonyms and illustrations if possible.  Write a sentence or an example with the word.  Periodically add words to the notebook and revisit it for writing or reading practice.

No School Monday, January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.

PBIS Sundae Reward

As part of our ongoing effort to reward the students who consistently act safely, responsibly, and respectfully, we are serving sundaes to all students who did not get a discipline referral in April. The sundaes will be served at lunch on May 2nd and 3rd. Half-day students will be served in their classrooms. The incentive for all students with no referrals for the month of May is Sports Day where they will be able to wear sports jerseys and uniforms for the day.

Testing Update

We have concluded all the Iowa Basic Skills Tests for the year and are expecting the results shortly. We are very pleased with how hard the kids worked and how serious they were while taking the tests. We are sure the results will be positive.

Recycling

We have had a very successful year recycling aluminum cans. Money from the cans is paying for the sundaes served this week. We do ask that you not drop off cans over the summer, but rather hold them if possible until the beginning of the next school year. Thanks!

February Newsletter

PBIS

We continue to focus on rewarding positive behavior, while re-teaching areas that need work. We reached our school wide behavior goal for January and the kids will be rewarded with Pajama Day on Feb 2nd. The incentive for February is Twin Day if we meet our behavior goal for the month which is under 40 discipline referrals. You can check with your child to see how we are doing during the month.

Word of the Day

As part of our yearlong focus on building academic vocabulary we have introduced the idea of the word of the day. The word is announced each morning over the P.A. and then posted in the office window. In the classrooms the kids can discuss the word and its meaning(s).  This word can be used as a nice ice breaker at home when discussing the day at school. The words come from lists created for targeting what kids should know at various points in their schools careers in order to be successful

ISAT and ITBS Tests

Illinois Achievement Tests start Monday March 13 and the Iowa Basic Skills Tests start Monday April 3rd. Each of these tests takes approximately one week to administer depending on absences. The teachers and students have been working very hard to be prepared. It is not too early too talk to your child about doing their best and having a positive attitude. Believing they can do well can make all the difference. Discussing the word of the day is a helpful activity as well.

PTA

The PTA had a successful fundraiser before the holiday which was capped off by the Big Party on January 13th. We appreciate all the support the PTA provides especially the recent order to replenish the school store. The next PTA meeting is February 6th at Nathan Hale Intermediate @ 7:00 PM.

School Board Meeting

In its ongoing effort to be accessible throughout the district the School District # 130 Board of Education Meeting will be held at Nathan Hale Primary School on February 16th at 6:30 PM. All interested adults are most welcome.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Friday February 3rd, is Parent-Teacher Conference day. There is no school for the students. The conferences are by invitation and all parents that are required to attend will be notified. As always, any parent who would like to have a conference can call to make an appointment.

Website

We continue to make additions to the website including putting this newsletter on-line. As we purchase new Accelerated Reader Quizzes we add them to the AR page on the site. Classroom teachers will be adding to their pages as the year progresses. You can e-mail Mr. Duggan at jduggan@sd-130.k12.il.us if you would like an e-mail alert when the web site has been updated.

Accelerated Reader

We are in the process of re-evaluating all the kids to see how they are progressing. It is important at home to make sure your child has a book with a colored dot on the spine every night and is reading it. If they are working hard, they will improve and gain confidence along the way.

Recycling

We continue to collect aluminum cans and pop can tabs. This money all goes towards rewards for positive behavior. To date we have received $153.68 from can collections, not to mention the benefit to the planet.

Preparing for Testing and Assessments

The next  months of school are crucial for the preparation of students for state and local tests and assessments. Students need to be in attendance regularly. They need to be keeping up with their school work, homework and reading. District writing assessments will take place in February for grades 3-8, March for grade 2 and April for grade 1. ISAT tests will take place in March for grades 3-8. ITBS will take place in April for grades 1-8. Many other local assessments are given from now through the end of May. Please ensure that your child is in school regularly, working on skills and assignments at home as well as in school, well rested and focused on schoolwork. We want our students to do their best.

Parent Teacher Conferences

The second quarter ends Friday, January 13th. Report Cards will be sent home on January 20th. Parent Teacher conferences will take place on Friday, February 3rd. These conferences are during school hours and by invitation. All parents required to attend will be notified. There will not be school for students on February 3rd. Parents who do not receive a conference appointment from a teacher may as always request a conference with the teacher on their own. Please call your child’s teacher to schedule if you would like to have a conference.

Winter Parties

Thanks to the PTA for providing treats for the students for the Fall Parties. The treats were appreciated and enjoyed. The students had a great time.

 Special Program

On Wednesday January 18th the students in grades K-5 will see a special performance about the life of Harriot Tubman, The performance by Historical Perspectives has gotten very good reviews by local schools.

Thanks for Attending the Holiday Programs

A special thank you to those who attended the holiday programs at NHP and NHI. The programs were well attended and the students enjoyed performing.

DARE Program

Thanks to the PTA for sponsoring the DARE program and graduation. The graduation was well attended. The students and teachers appreciate the support and look forward to visiting the Robert Crown center later this year.

Recycling

We are still recycling this school year. All the cans the kids brought in last year went a long way towards making our positive behavior rewards program a success, not to mention the benefits to the planet. We are looking for aluminum cans. You can send them in a bag with your child unless it is too big to go on the bus, in which case you can drop it off at either office.

Vocabulary

As part of the ongoing effort to improve reading scores, we are initiating a program to increase the academic vocabulary of our children. Besides the ongoing efforts in the classroom, we will include two lists of words with every newsletter. These are words you can look up and discuss with your child. His or her ability to use and understand these words will enhance their reading fluency and comprehension. Also do not hesitate to read books to your children that are above their reading level, as exposure to these words will have a positive long-term impact.

Website

Do not forget that our school websites can be accessed through the District #130 site at www.district130.org  Click on schools then choose Nathan Hale Primary or Intermediate. You can access the accelerated reader quiz lists and an on-line version of this newsletter. We will keep you updated regarding new additions to the site this year. PBIS

The PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) program is continuing this year. The program is an effort to identify, teach, and reward positive behavior in order to minimize the negative behavior. In our first year last year we made great strides and we intend to build on that momentum. Ask your child if they have earned any Hale High Fives. At the beginning of each month we will have a brief assembly to go over the rules and a reward at the end of each month at lunch. We will continue with our raffles and PBIS store as well.
