Fall 2007

Dear Families:

Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year at Horace Mann and Greenbriar Schools!  We are looking forward to working with your child as he/she begins a school year filled with new and exciting learning experiences.  The pre-kindergarten years provide the foundations for your child’s future school success.  We invite and encourage you to visit your child’s classroom and attend parent activities and parent /teacher conferences.   It is the parents’ involvement that fortifies what the child learns in the classroom.  Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher if you have questions at any time during the school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carol Crum

Principal

From School To Home

Preschool opens your child to a new and exciting world of possibilities. There are opportunities to try new activities, such as finger painting, group music and games. Your child will try different ways to put puzzles together, build a house with blocks, and to paste things on paper. He will learn what it means to finish one thing before moving on to another. He will quickly learn that he can ask the adults in the classroom for help in solving problems or trying new activities.

At home your child may try to do more things for himself rather than letting you help him. He may be more independent about creating play activities, and you may see him act out a dramatic play or try out a new art form learned at school.

To nurture your child’s independent thinking at home:

·         Help him express himself. Give your child markers and plain paper so he can make his own lines and designs. Ask him to tell you about his drawings, and write down his words to show that you appreciate his creativity.

·         …and help him help himself. Guide your child as he figures out how to clean up a spill or put on his socks.

·         Listen! When your child is trying to tell you or the family about something he did, or about an idea, take time to listen until he finishes.

·         Play-act together. Act out pretend stories with your child, letting her be the teacher, or the doctor, or the mother.
