Dear VMMS Students and Families,

It is with great honor and excitement that I introduce myself, Michael Steele, as the new Principal at Veterans Memorial Middle School. My passion for helping and educating students has been shaped over the last 19 years as a middle school science teacher, assistant principal at the grade school level, and middle school principal in Calumet City. In each of my roles, I have always sought to ensure the success of each student and the school as a whole by providing the best instructional and extracurricular opportunities possible.

A well-rounded education begins with instruction from outstanding teachers, as well as extracurricular activities and supports that enable students to develop character, cultivate passions, and explore the world outside of the classroom. Using data from our local NWEA MAP assessment, my staff and I will work to provide relative instruction related to our areas in need of growth. The state-mandated PARCC assessment demands that our students face more academic rigor on a daily basis in all subject areas. As the principal at VMMS, I am committed to ensuring that student needs and interests shape their daily instruction and extracurricular opportunities.

In order for all students to achieve academicaly and socially at VMMS, I encourage all parents and family members to take an active role in their child’s education. I am looking forward to working closely with you to provide a positve middle school experience for your child. I am very passionate about the middle school years for children. All of my teaching experience comes from working with students at the middle school level. This is an important and critical time of transition-moving from the elementary experience and preparing for the bigger challenges of high school. During my first few days in the building, I have had the privilege of meeting some of the parents and staff members at VMMS. One of the greatest takeaways from these converstations has been the immense enthusiasm and pride for the school and community. It is through that same enthusiasm and pride that I look forward to becoming an intergral part of the community and working with each of you to continue the great successes at VMMS.

I hope that each of you have been enjoying these past few weeks of summer and are looking forward to a great school year. Together I know we can make a difference!

We will keep you updated throughout the school year through our school website, periodic calendars, and newsletters. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with questions, concerns, or ideas that you would like to discuss.

Go Patriots!

Mr. Michael Steele
