District 130 Spelling Bee Crowns a Champion

Friday, January 20 was an exciting day for 60 of District 130’s best spellers from grades 7 and 8. The District 130 Spelling Bee was held in the auditorium at Veterans Memorial Middle School in Blue Island. Qualifying finalists from the three individual building Spelling Bee competitions took part in this challenging event and battled it out to determine the finalist who will compete in the South Suburban Cook County Regional Spelling Bee. The students were put to the test in front of parents, staff, administrators, school board members, and peers. District 130 students knew their way around the English language, and a seventh grader from Nathan Hale Middle School in Crestwood was declared the champion by correctly spelling the word “bambino”. She will advance to compete in the South Suburban Cook County Regional Spelling Bee at Central Middle School in Tinley Park on February 7.
The purpose of Spelling Bee competitions is to help students improve their spelling, increase vocabulary use, learn language concepts, develop correct English usage and to promote academic excellence. Each student’s hard work and dedication, along with the work of their teachers, was reflected throughout the Spelling Bee.
