Colleen M. McKay, Ed.D. – Superintendent

To the role of Superintendent of Cook County School District 130, Colleen M. McKay, Ed.D., brings a history of transformational leadership that has led to improved educational programming for students. Dr. McKay has nearly two decades in public education working in large, urban school districts,  and she believes in creating a student-centered educational community focused on empowering students to achieve their own unique individual potential.

Prior to her current role, Dr. McKay served as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for our district, where she was responsible for initiatives and coordination of the curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development in the areas of teaching and learning. Dr. McKay is supportive of continuous growth through high-quality teaching and leadership practices. She credits the success of programming to a deliberate move from skills-based, resource-driven instruction to an educational culture which supports the academic, social, and physical development of every child.

Before joining CCSD 130, Dr. McKay served as the Director of Teaching and Learning with the Joliet Public Schools District 86, where she provided leadership in the development, implementation, and coordination of instructional programs. In her time with Joliet, she also worked in human resources to provide supports to classroom teachers, as a Program Coordinator who guided teacher teams to develop English Language Arts and Social Science curricula, and served on numerous interdepartmental committees to develop several key district documents to guide district practices and continue to support the work of classroom teachers. These experience led her to opportunities to work at the state and national levels on assessment development and review. Prior to her administrative roles, Dr. McKay taught sixth-grade for seven years in District 86.

Dr. McKay’s education includes a Doctor of Education from the University of St. Francis, where she has served as an adjunct professor within their Master of Science in Education -- Teaching and Learning program. She also earned a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Aurora University, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Eastern Illinois University.
